Q. Is a Métis card the same as a Treaty card?

A. No. A Métis card is issued to eligible Métis persons by the Métis Nation of Alberta. Indian Status "Treaty" cards are issued by the Federal government only to Status Indians as defined by the Indian Act.

 

Q. Can I get cheap cigarettes and gas if I'm Métis?

A. No.  Only Status Indians with an Alberta Tobacco and Fuel exemption card are entitled to purchase tobacco and fuel and only on reserve.

 

Q. Can I fish and hunt with a Métis card?

Q. Can I get funding for university?

A. No. However, there is funding available for post-secondary education at college.  Contact the Métis local office or the Fort McMurray Employment centre at 714-3029.

 

Q. Is there medical coverage for Métis?

A. No. Medical coverage is through the provincial government because Métis have no agreement with the federal government like Status Indians.
